Biotechnology Research Center was inaugurated April 2018, already active in providing educational programs for students related to the fields of pharmaceuticals. As a form of contribution, we are open to receive visits from students who want to know more about biotechnology in the pharmaceutical industry. One of those who visited our lab was the biomedical master student of FK UI to support their biotechnology course which was guided by Dr. rer. physiol. Septelia Inawati Wanandi. The purpose of the visit is to make students more familiar with the application of biotechnology in the pharmaceutical industry.
The educational visit program attended by 31 biomedical master students, lecturers, and some staff. To reduce the crowded in the room and for the participant convenience, the event divided into two groups, mornings and afternoon groups. The first session began with a presentation by Mr. Lee Eun Nam as the research team leader about Daewoong’s profile. The second session continued with the presentation of the biopharmaceutical manufacturing process by Ms. Riski. As a senior researcher, she explained related upstream to downstream processes in the pharmaceutical industry. Besides listening to the presentations, students also have the opportunity to be able to conduct protein analysis with instrument HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) directly. Protein sample that used for the analysis are Somatropin (hGH- Human growth hormone) and EGF (Epidermal growth factor). Students are divided into two teams to carry out HPLC analysis with two different types of columns: Size Elution Chromatography (SEC) and Reverse Phase (RP).
Students also comprehend more about lab instruments and working principles of each instrument with the lab tour. At the end of the session, the students were very enthusiastic about asking questions and provide positive feedback to this activity. Through a given questionnaire, 78% of students felt that this activity was very beneficial to accompany their biotechnology lectures, while the other 19% thought this activity was quite useful and the other 3% were neutral. They hope to be given the opportunity with a longer time for the seminar and be able to see directly the activities of other analyses and also research collaboration with Dewoong.
